A major research focus at the Anthony Nolan Research Institute has been the study of the impact of different genetic markers on the clinical outcome of patients following haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The objective of this group is to provide the essential link between understanding the genetic information, interpreting this in the context of the clinical information in patients and ‘translating’ this into changes/improvements in practice in the patient setting.
One area on which we have focused is reducing the risk of disease relapse after transplant. We have identified donor factors which help us to select the most appropriate donor based on their genetic tests. The results of our studies allow us to undertake translational research projects which put into practice what we have learnt, and have both a clinical and laboratory focus.

Bronwen Shaw is employed jointly between The Anthony Nolan Trust and the Institute of Cancer Research. She is an honorary NHS consultant in blood and marrow transplantation at the Royal Marsden Hospital.
The CRG works closely with Dr Steven Marsh and the HLA Informatics Group.
The CRG works closely with all the UK transplant centre and with the British Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation.
The CRG has an important input into the Haematopoietic Cell Transplant component of the International Histocompatibility Working Group, by actively contributing to and running studies.
