It is with great regret that we announce the untimely death of our Chief Executive,Dr Steve McEwan, on 15 September 2008 following a road accident.Joining in 1994 as Financial Controller, Steve rose within the Charity to become its Chief Executive in 2003 and led The Anthony Nolan Trust until his death. |
Under Steve’s leadership, The Anthony Nolan Trust followed a path of further development and expansion, including the recently opened Cell Therapy Centre in Nottingham, part of the wider Cord Blood Bank Programme. Eating, sleeping and breathing The Anthony Nolan Trust, Steve spent the last twelve months ensuring that the Cord Blood Programme could become a reality. The new facility has the potential to maximise the number of patients who can be treated with a life saving transplant, as well as increasing the research into other life saving conditions. A bone marrow donor himself, Steve was keen to ensure that the best resource was available to help those who needed a transplant. His contribution to the fields of leukaemia and bone marrow transplantation was evident across the UK and worldwide. He was always proud to represent the world’s first bone marrow donor register and played an active part in international bone marrow organisations.
In his spare time Steve was a keen musician, playing the double bass and bass guitar. He was a keen fan of jazz and 1970s rock, in particular Led Zeppelin and the Stray Cats; for whose final UK gig he had tickets, but unfortunately never saw.
With a less than reverent sense of humour, he left instructions for the playing of the classic Fly Me to the Moon at his funeral.
Simon Dyson, Chairman of The Anthony Nolan Trust pays tribute, “Steve made an enormous contribution to the success of The Anthony Nolan Trust, during his first eight years as Financial Controller and then his five years as Chief Executive. The Charity was an enormous part of his life and he never stopped thinking about how we could save even more lives. He will be greatly missed by all who had had the privilege of meeting him.”
Steve’s death has come as a huge shock to his family, friends and colleagues.
Steve was a great family man and leaves his wife, Andrea, and young son, Sam.
There will be a Private Funeral Service.
