Hello,
So, why am I starting this ‘Save a Life’ campaign? Well, what it comes down to is, if it wasn’t for a bone marrow donation, I genuinely don’t reckon I’d be writing this now. Being given someone’s bone marrow saved my life. And I want people to know they can potentially do the same for someone else – and what a great feeling that can be to save someone’s life by doing something fairly simple.
Every person I can persuade to join the register could potentially save someone’s life like mine was saved.
When I heard I needed a bone marrow transplant, I thought they were going to stick my brother and myself side by side and squeeze and grind his bones to get all the marrow out and then inject it into my system. It was daft really, but I just didn't know what the procedure was going to be like.
The reality for a donor is it’s relatively easy and pain free and that’s what I want people to know about so they’ll hopefully decide to sign up. There are so many people who aren’t so lucky and can’t find a match. That's where you could come in.
When my brother donated, he said he was bit tired at the end of the day but that was it. He was surprised how easy it was.
There are 1,400 people in the UK waiting for a bone marrow transplant and they can’t find a match. Maybe you could be a match for one of them.
If you are between the ages of 18 – 40 years old, please consider signing up to The Anthony Nolan bone marrow register.
To join the register via postal method please-
Click here to download the 'commit to a lifesaving procedure' booklet.
Then click here to download the medical questionnaire.
I’ve started a Facebook group “Kev Bales – Save a Life”and it would be great to see you on there. Click here for more information.
You can also follow The Anthony Nolan Trust/me on twitter.
If you’re not 18-40 years old, I’d still really appreciate your help in my campaign just as much. I’d be really chuffed if you could forward this page on to someone, who is in that age group and encourage them to join up. Also, please join the Facebook group and invite others to join too.
Thanks so much for your help!
Cheers,
Kev
