Carena Cash-Abbey

12-year-old Carena Cash-Abbey from Hackney, East London had just completed the London (Ten) Bridges charity walk with her school when she and her family were told the devastating news that the leukaemia was back.

Carena had fought off the illness last year at Great Ormond Street Hospital spending 11 months in remission before she was given the news. For Carena to survive she is now desperately relying on her finding a matching bone marrow donor amongst the black or mixed race community.

Mrs Duffley, Carena’s Head of Learning at Cardinal Pole R.C School in Hackney describes Carena as “a thoroughly nice young girl, who is liked by all. She has shown a quiet determination to achieve academic success and to cope with her illness.” Everyone at the school is anxious to help in any way they can. They are urging people from the huge Black communities in London to come forward and join the Anthony Nolan bone marrow register at registration sessions in Shepherd’s Bush and Walthamstow - see full details below.

Carena’s mother Angela Xavier says. "I am pleading to all people Black, White, Asian and mixed race. Wherever you’re from, please do not wait until this affects someone you love before you do something. Leukaemia can affect anybody. I do not want to lose my little girl, and I don’t want anybody else to go through what I’m going through. Please think about the valuable gift you could be giving to someone out there – you could save a life".
