Heather Ross

Heather Ross, Birmingham

Heather joined the register in January 2002. She later went onto to become a bone marrow donor on behalf of her triplet sister.

Ignore the misconception that it’s really painful. It’s not. It’s just a minor inconvenience that is certainly outweighed by the feeling of doing something really worthwhile.

My triplet sister, Liz was on the register and was chosen as a match for a patient. Unfortunately she could not proceed as she had just had a baby. As we are identical twins she asked me to stand in for her.

I won’t lie, I was very scared but I have two children and the thought of them ever needing help in this way made me put any concerns to one side.

The donation was very easy. I had very little discomfort just a slight backache (like muscle strain). I was also looked after incredibly well by The Anthony Nolan Trust and hospital staff.

I would advise other people thinking of signing up to the register to only join if you are prepared to carry through and donate. As life experiences go, it’s certainly near the top of the list. I will always have very positive memories of my donation. That feeling that you may have saved someone’s life is amazing. I am very proud and privileged to have been a donor.
