Dragon Boat

Location: Lakeside Diving & Watersports Centre, Thurrock, Essex (opposite Lakeside Shopping Centre)
Date: Sunday 28 June 2009 - 9.30am to 4.30pm (times may vary)

The Dragon Boat Story

Dragon Boat Racing is believed to have originated in China over 4000 years ago and is a sport shrouded in myth and legend. The most popular story is that Dragon Boat racing started around 2000 BC in southern China to commemorate the death of the famous warrior poet Qu Yuan who threw himself into the Mi Lo River. Local fishermen raced out in their boats, but failed to save him. At the annual Tuen Ng (Dragon Boat) Festival in Hong Kong this ancient legend is re-enacted in the form of dragon boat races which are held to ward off evil spirits, protect the health of the people and ensure a good harvest.

But you don’t need to go to Hong Kong to enjoy this exhilarating, addictive and competitive team event. You can join us locally by organising a team to race head to head in a 30ft Hong Kong style Dragon Boat, where the drummer beats out a rhythm for the 10 paddlers.

The event is great fun, and not only a challenge for the team but also for each individual as it tests your physical and mental abilities to the full. Friends, family and colleagues can relax on the banks of the water and view the fun from dry land whilst cheering on the teams and adding to the lively atmosphere of an event you really should add to your annual social calendar.

How to take part

Get together a crew of at least 10 paddlers and 1 drummer (who sits at the front of the boat). You can have up to 15 people in your crew, four of which are subs and don’t worry if you have never completed an event of this nature before as each person (including subs) will receive briefing and training prior to your crew taking control of a 30ft Dragon Boat. Each team is assigned an experienced and trained helmsman who will ensure you face the right direction and cross the winning line in style.

The entry fee covers the cost of staging the event. This ensures that all sponsorship raised supports our lifesaving work.

Entry Fee: £15 per person
Minimum Sponsorship: £50 per person
