Hackney Empire to stage lifesaving event

Leading leukaemia charity, The Anthony Nolan Trust, is staging a lifesaving clinic at the famous Hackney Empire in a bid to help save lives. Supported by Newmont Travel, The Anthony Nolan Trust is urging people aged 18-40 to sign up to its bone marrow register.

Local teenager Carena Cash Abbey recently celebrated her 13^th birthday and is still searching for her lifesaving bone marrow donor. This registration session will offer hope to thousands of children and adults like Carena, who are relying on the kindness of a stranger for their hope for survival.

‘The best chance of finding a match for a patient is from a donor from the same ethnic background, but minority ethnic groups are not well represented on the register and why we wanted to put on a session like this to encourage people in the local community to come out and support this campaign’ says Frank Sweeney of The Hackney Empire.

The chances of finding a donor for a patient from an ethnic minority group can be as low as 20 -30 %. There is a shortage of donors from all ethnic groups on the register and that imbalance needs to change. We urgently need more people to come forward and would like to see young people from a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds registering with The Anthony Nolan Trust on Sunday 14^th September to give patients like Carena a better chance of finding a donor.

We encourage all eligible members of the community to come along on the day and register as potential donors’.

Signing up to the register is the first step to potentially saving someone’s life. A blood sample is all that is needed to join the register and then only if found to match a patient will you be called upon to donate.
