Every 21 minutes someone is diagnosed with leukaemia or a related blood illness, it is indiscriminate and can affect anyone at anytime regardless of age, race or sex. Leukaemia is particularly prevalent in children and young adults and is the biggest cause of death by disease in children in the UK.
For thousands of people each year, the only hope of surviving leukaemia is a bone marrow transplant from a complete stranger. When a child or adult needs a bone marrow transplant, the family are tested first. However tissue type is random; in 3 out of 4 cases a match is not found in the family. For the child or adult suffering with leukaemia the question is “how will I find the person who will save my life?''
